Almond - Deformation

Symptoms
There are no distinct P deficiency symptoms. In case of deficiency the tree growth is stunted, and leaves and shoots remain smaller than normal. Leaves show diffuse, irregular chlorotic mottling. Yellow patches appear on leaf blades and margins and turn necrotic brown later on. Leaves are cupped longitudinally upward and are slightly twisted. Heavy premature leaf shed.

Reasons
Phosphorus deficiency. P is taken up into the fruit at low rates first, and uptake rate increases from about 100 days after bloom on. It accumulates mainly in the generative parts as pollen and seeds. The values for leaf analysis should be in a range of 0.1 - 0.3%. P deficiency is rarely seen in the orchard.

Phosphorus deficiency made worse by

  • Acidic or very alkaline (calcareaus) soils
  • Low organic matter
  • Cold or wet conditions
  • Crops with a poorly developed root system
  • Soils with low P reserves
  • Soils with a high phosphate capacity
  • Iron rich soils

Phosphorus is important for

  • New growth is more vigorous and healthy
  • Number of flowers may increase
  • Fruit maturity may be advanced
