Practical solutions that positively impact food production by improving water productivity and soil health are key for the longevity of the California almond industry. Today’s growers are faced with water scarcity, drought and rising temperatures, and the need for proactively protecting and, in some situations, regenerating our soil resources has never been more critical to combat these issues. In short, we need better soil. Better soil means better water productivity, better nitrogen use efficiency, and an overall better environment.
Yara with Heliae Ag has launched the BetterSoil Alliance to support the California almond industry in its pursuit of sustainable farming practices. Through the alliance, sustainably-focused solutions will be put to the test to understand their collective impact on critical issues the almond industry faces including water scarcity, drought and rising temperatures year-over-year. Whether you’re a grower, advisor, handler, innovator, or part of a food company there is a way to get involved and join in the efforts.
Your livelihood depends on growing almonds, and we know how committed you are to the industry. The BetterSoil Alliance was created to support you in protecting your right to farm. We invite you to participate in implementing the solutions in your orchards through a customized crop nutrition program* for the opportunity to be rewarded based on your water productivity and soil health. The data collected from orchards will be used to better understand the positive impact the solutions can have when implemented together. Let us know you're interested to learn more.
*Please note that, at the moment, this program is only for almond growers in California

Retailers are also invited to pledge to help grow the fund, and reward more growers for their efforts.
Combating the threats of rising temperatures and drought is critical to preserve yield and quality, and ultimately maintain volume and profits. Through our solutions, the BetterSoil Alliance can curb the yield and quality reduction and provide handlers a competitive edge in accessing more sustainably grown almonds. Now is the time to get involved.
We know for many food companies the need to meet sustainability goals and protect your supply chain is top of mind. The BetterSoil Alliance helps meet the sustainability goals while also providing growers with practical solutions to improve water use, soil health and greenhouse gas emissions. Join the Alliance and help us reward growers for their sustainably-focused efforts by pledging** to help grow the fund and reward more growers.

*The details of the program are still being finalized and will be communicated to growers in future announcements, but it is anticipated that participating growers that comply with the program requirements will be eligible to receive a sustainability payment based on water productivity and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) they achieve under the program, as well as recognition in the alliance for their efforts.
**The details regarding such pledges and related terms are still being finalized and will be provided in future announcements and to those companies who are interested in contributing.
