Tomatoes and Peppers

Nitrogen is vital to the proper growth, maturity and yield of tomatoes and peppers. The rate, timing and availability of nitrogen are all part of an efficient, well-managed fertilizer program. YaraLiva™ products, with its fast-acting nitrate nitrogen gives the tomato and pepper grower the control he needs to produce high quality and a profitable yield.

Sidedress, Topdress, Fertigation – YaraLiva™ is your best nitrogen source. Fast, precise feeding, it goes to work right away, and then gets out of the way. Nitrate nitrogen present in YaraLiva™ products is readily available to tomato and pepper roots. In the soil, nitrate (NO3) is the preferred form of nitrogen for these crops. Since nitrate does not require conversion (nitrification) as do ammonium (NH4) and urea sources, root uptake and crop response is rapid and precise over a wide range of soil conditions. With YaraLiva™ as a management tool, the tomato and pepper grower can control leaf and stem growth while promoting optimum fruit development, maturity, quality and yield.

YaraLiva™ helps your crop as it helps your soil.

Fruit, leaves, stems and roots – they all need calcium for healthy growth and development. Young, actively growing tissues have the greatest demand and when calcium deficiency occurs, it appears in the youngest parts of the plant. With proper soil moisture and available calcium in the immediate root zone, the movement of calcium from the roots to the tops and fruit can be maintained to "satisfy" the plant's requirements. If not, fruit quality and yield will suffer and is a major cause of blossom-end rot (BER).

Fertilizer Program

Tomatoes and peppers grown for hand or machine harvest require nitrogen control to maximize efficiency. The efficient grower manages the nitrogen needs of his crop.

With soil and tissue test values plus crop history and experience as guidelines, tomato and pepper growers have developed the following general program:

1. Pre-plant and/or starter applications of complete NPK fertilizer supplying all of the P and K, but only 1/3 to 1/2 of the total nitrogen required. Thus a 1-1-1, 1-2-3, or 1-3-3 grade.

2. Sidedress, topdress, fertigation- apply the remainder of the N requirement through YaraLiva™ prior to setting first fruit. More precise control of supplemental nitrogen has been achieved by splitting the rate into two or three applications. This allows growers to precision-feed their crop based on the growth and the prevailing soil, weather, and crop nitrogen conditions.
