Fertilization of Nut Crops

Nut trees require proper nutrition for tree health, vigor and optimal yield. A complete fertilization program based on annual soil and leaf analysis, which includes YaraLiva™ products, can maximize the establishment and development of seedling and young trees, and improve the vigor and yield of producing trees.

YaraLiva™ calcium nitrate based fertilizers provide trees with non-acidifying nitrate nitrogen, and water soluble calcium for strong root structure and healthy tree growth and development.

YaraLiva™ – the right fertilizer for nut crops!
Tropicote™, Calcinit™, CN-9® and CAN-17 are premium fertilizers that supply immediately available nitrate nitrogen and calcium, all without affecting soil pH. The nitrate nitrogen is quickly taken up by nut tree roots to give the tree the growth response the grower wants. Plus the water-soluble calcium acts at the cell lever to support healthy root development and proper shoot, leaf and bud growth critical to rapid seedling establishment and mature tree vigor. Whether applied broadcast, water run, or injected as a liquid through the irrigation system, YaraLiva™ is the right fertilizer to include in your nut trees' fertilizer management program.

Soil Acidity, Calcium and Nut Yields
When the soil pH drops, soil nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium are leached through the soil profile and out of the rooting zone. As this continues, they can be replaced by highly acidic and toxic metal ions, such as aluminum and manganese which then can dominate the cation exchange (the soil's nutrient holding capacity). As a result, the relative concentration of the essential plant nutrients in this soil "reservoir" is decreased and productivity is reduced.

Calcium is an essential nutrient for all plants. Accordingly, nut trees require a continuous supply of calcium for proper root growth and stem and leaf development – all critical to the vigor, integrity and longevity of a productive orchard. Calcium deficiency will result in reduced nut yield.

In this harsh acidic environment, almond roots will eventually become stunted and nutrient uptake by the tree will decrease. As soil buffering capacity is lost, tree vigor and nut yield will be reduced. The soil's natural buffering capacity usually can counteract the acidifying effects of one application of ammonium nitrogen fertilizers and gradually return the pH to its original value. However, continual use of these acidifying sources can permanently lower the soil pH in the root zone. YaraLiva™  products, the non-acid forming fertilizers, are important tools in a nut grower's program by supplying the nitrogen trees need without lowering soil pH and limiting tree growths, vigor and yield.
