Yara Acquires Petro Miljö

Press Release  - November 16, 2011

Yara acquires environmental technology leader Petro Miljö

(Oslo/Göteborg, 19th October 2011) – Yara International and Petrokraft AB today announced that Yara Sverige AB has acquired Petro Miljö AB, a fully owned subsidiary of Petrokraft AB. Petro Miljö is a leader in Selective Non Catalytic Reduction (SNCR), a technology for reducing nitrogen oxides  NOx emissions from industrial plants.

Yara and Petro Miljö started cooperating in 2007 to promote and install the most suitable technology for NOx abatement using SNCR, combining Yara’s knowledge of nitrogen chemicals with Petro Miljö’s experience of combustion processes.

The acquisition will allow Yara to offer a complete solution, ranging from designing and building the SNCR system and its storage facilities, to supplying the right reagent and advising on chemical storage and handling. The already proven SNCR technology reduces nitrogen oxides emissions in some cases by up to 90 per cent, turning them into harmless nitrogen and water. Petro Miljö has to date equipped more than 180 combustion lines around the world with its SNCR system.

“Yara aims to provide the best clean air solutions for industrial segments so we are thrilled to have Petro Miljö joining the Yara corporate family” said Yves Bonte, Head of the Industrial Segment at Yara International. “By integrating Petro Miljö’s technical expertise with Yara’s know-how, we will be better positioned to serve the increasing number of industrial facilities that need to treat their nitrogen oxides emissions in an optimal way.”

”Petro Miljö is and has been driven by the regulatory demand for emissions reductions. It has been successful in European markets, which were some of the first to introduce such legislation” says Roger Karlsson President of Petrokraft AB. “These regulations are now being implemented globally, and given Yara’s global presence, Yara has the resources and knowledge to help Petro Miljö to continue and sustain its growth”.

Nitrogen oxides  cause health problems and typical local pollution such as smog and acid rain. With asthma being the largest children chronic disease according to the WHO, authorities are addressing this issue through legislation. In combination with the Selective Non Catalytic Reduction technology, nitrogen oxides  abatement chemicals can achieve high emission reduction, in some cases up to 90% emission reduction.

The acquisition means that all Petro Miljö employees and assets are transferred to Yara Sverige AB.
